Cherry Lake Publishing/Sleeping Bear Press Editorial and Social Media Internship

Sleeping Bear Press is looking for a talented and passionate in-office intern for their Editorial and Marketing/Publicity departments. This intern will work with Cherry Lake Publishing for the fall and winter terms (October 2024-May 2025). The learning experience will span across both departments (Editorial and Marketing/Publicity) and provide insight into the publishing industry from concept phase through development and product marketing. Pay is $15 per hour.

Criteria:

  • A current sophomore, junior, or senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Must be able to work 10-15 hours a week
  • Perceptive of online trends, and responsive to the quickly evolving culture of social media marketing (specifically TikTok), and comfortable making and starring in social posts
  • Passionate about children’s literature and nonfiction with a strong desire to spark a love of learning across genres and subject areas in the next generation
  • Ability to work reliably, independently, and collaboratively
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Drive and dedication to deliver high-quality work
  • A creative self-starter who will bring new ideas to the table

Interns will gain experience in areas such as:

  • Creating your own social media campaign
  • Creating pitch presentations for a potential new school/library series and a potential trade children’s book
  • Pitching ideas weekly, recording video content, editing and posting to Reels and TikTok
  • Responding to comments, growing followers, and interacting with our social media community
  • Conducting research for trending topics and school curriculum for potential new school/library series
  • Assisting designers and editors with photo research
  • Assisting with indexing for series as needed
  • Participating in our company diversity initiatives
  • Participating in department meetings
  • Proofing and reviewing titles once in layout
  • Fact-checking series as needed
  • Data-tracking and other administrative tasks
  • Evaluating submissions and drafting author feedback
  • Formatting manuscript
  • Understanding the publishing process from idea to sale of books
  • Working closely with the Marketing team to create engaging and imaginative content to help grow our social media presence and brand voice
  • Participating in publicity planning for events and communicating with authors
  • Compiling comp copy lists and keeping track of author information
  • Preparing publicity materials for distribution
  • Writing press releases

This is a paid, in-office position (office is located in Ann Arbor, MI) with an expected commitment of 10-15 hours per week depending on availability.
